Castle

The Castle of Ali Pasha stands on the peak of the hill of the village of the same name near Parga. Built in the early 19th century, it is square in plan and relatively small, and from this vantage point it commanded the region of Parga and the Ionian Sea.

The fortress of Kiafa rises in the mountains of Souli, above the village of Samoniva. The view from the fort is panoramic: to the west lie the ravines of the Acheron and the plain of Fanari, and from here one grasps the whole mountainous formation of the region. On its west side survives a double wall with vaulted storerooms on the ground floor.

Riniasa Castle protected the medieval city of Riniasa (near Riza village) from a naturally fortified rise, keeping watch over land and sea trade. It is believed to have been built by the Despot of Epirus Thomas I in the late 13th century, and was for this reason called Thomokastro.

Rogi Castle, with its excellently preserved ancient and Byzantine walls, stands atop a low hill (50 m) on the north slope of the Louros valley (ancient Haradros), on the right bank of the river, south of the village of Kerasounta (7 km from Philippiada). In antiquity the river was navigable as far as the castle, so the ancient settlement served as a port on the Ambracian Gulf, fully protected from winds, storms and pirates.

At Pente Pigadia (Five Springs), in the region of Kleisoura, there are two small castles located close to one another. The first was built in the early 19th century with polygonal masonry and is today in ruins.

The second, also built in the early 19th century, is small and likewise of polygonal masonry, but with elements of western European baroque. It survives up to two storeys high and is in better condition than the first.
