Monastery

The abandoned Monastery of the Prophet Ilias at Iliovouni was built in 1720 by the monk Kallistos, its first abbot, and renovated in 1852 by the abbot Dionysios. The wall paintings in its church, executed in 1878, show strong western influences, and its marble icon screen holds interesting icons. The monastery cells were burnt by German occupation troops in 1943 to prevent their use by the Greek resistance; the belfry dates to 1908.

The Monastery of Aghios Demetrios (Tourkobaloukou) lies near the right bank of the River Kokytos, a tributary of the Acheron, in the vicinity of Kypseli village. As a plinth inscription testifies, its church was built by the Despot of Epirus Michail II Doukas in 1242, as was the monastery refectory (Trapeza), later converted into the church of Aghios Georgios. The side chapels were added later and the narthex around the late 13th century.

Lekatsa Monastery stands on the west slope of the mountain between Myrsini and Riza, dedicated to the Gennisis tis Theotokou (Birth of the Virgin). According to Seraphim Xenopoulos it was founded in the 8th or 9th century and took its name from its founder or one of its abbots; one tradition holds that the monastery church was built after 1775.

The monastery has recently been restored, and is set within the aesthetic forest of Lekatsa, with many paths for walking that reach down to the sea.
