The Acheron, the mythical river with its unique natural wealth and mysterious atmosphere, can be approached in many ways. At its mouth, at the settlement of Ammoudia, it is navigable for boat trips as far as the Nekromanteion.
In the straits of the Acheron you can walk, swim in the river, go kayaking or horse-riding and explore its paths, on an enchanting riverside route from the Skala of Tzavelaina to the Gates of Hades, near the village of Trikastro. Summer is the most suitable season for the river routes.
The most captivating experience is crossing the straits through the river itself, alternating swimming and walking between sheer rocks and dense vegetation. A notable monument in the area is the Byzantine Monastery of Aghios Demetrios, built on the bank of the River Kokytos near the village of Kypseli.
