The Roman Villa at Riza forms part of a larger architectural complex, preserved to a significant height as far as its vaulted roof. It is decagonal in plan, inscribed in a square of 8 x 8.20 m, and its interior is decorated with niches — four on the north and two on the south side — each surmounted by a relieving semi-circular arch.

The Roman aqueduct of Nikopolis was constructed after the foundation of the city by Octavian (Augustus) (1st century BC - 1st century AD). It consisted of a pipeline 50 km long that carried water from the sources of the River Louros to the two wells of the Nymphaion of Nikopolis.

Souli is a mountainous region that the Turks never subdued during the Ottoman period, remaining the unbowed refuge of all who refused enslavement. Surrounded by Mts Mournga, Zavrocho and Troulia, it consisted first of four and later of seven villages; at its mid-18th-century heyday it ruled over 80 villages and had some 6,000 inhabitants, 1,700 of them armed. The barrenness of their land led the Souliots to levy taxes on the Ottoman agas, provoking repeated campaigns against them.
